Clarifying Your Goals
Writing successful goals is very difficult for most people. There are many reasons for this, and until we understand the basis for our goals, or what we think they should be, we will not be able to develop goals that become attainable. Here is the foundation for successful goals.
- Know who You Are
You must first determine who you are. Everything you do on the outside is determined by how you feel on the inside – how do you see yourself? If you're not happy with yourself or where you are in life right now, who would you like to be like or what would you like to be doing? Be honest with yourself and analyze what your values are – what is most important to you? Your values are what make up your personality and who you are. They determine your beliefs, your expectations, your attitude and your actions.
- Your Happiness
The ultimate goal for everyone is their own happiness. Your life must be in harmony with your values or you will never find the happiness you desire.
Take a look at your life right now. Whatever it is, it is determined by how you feel on the inside – so within, so without. When you live in opposition to your values, you will have a conflict going on within you, and you will not achieve true happiness. Clarifying your values is critical, because when you're able to do that, you can organize your life around them.
- Develop Self Trust
Self trust is developed by listening to your intuition – that still, small voice within. When people listen to their inner self and trust that a higher power is leading them, they move towards their greatness much more easily. At first you may find this difficult or you won't trust yourself. The good news is that you already have a guidance system within you that is working all the time whether you realize it or not. When a situation comes up, take note of whether it feels good or bad? There are only two emotions – one feels good, one feels bad. That is your guidance system at work. Practice paying attention to situations as they come up, take note of the emotions you are feeling, and in time you will become friends with your inner voice and learn to trust it.
- Don't Let Your Past Determine Your Future
The past is the past – don't give it any value unless you can learn from it. We've all been in situations that greatly affected who we are today, and we had absolutely no control over them. As little children our minds were "sponges," and we pretty much "sopped up" everything we were exposed to – good or bad. We filed these events away in our brains, just as we have filed away good and bad things that happened to us in grade school, high school, college, jobs, our marriages, etc. These events became our "beliefs." Unfortunately, in most cases, we think of them as the "gospel truth," which they are not. You are the only one who looks at them in that way. Why? Because you allowed the emotion you felt at the time to be imprinted on your mind exactly as you felt it, never questioning if it was true or not. It was your interpretation – not actuality. It then became your belief.
If you can put your values and beliefs into perspective, you are on your way to writing an effective goal program for yourself. If you feel overwhelmed and feel you could benefit from some guidance, there are many excellent programs available to help you – more now than ever, because we have awakened to the fact that our mind is pretty powerful and really does control our lives.
